Unlike wood operated fireplaces, an outdoor natural gas fireplace unit doesn’t need extensive cleaning. Hence why, they are now a popular choice among many homeowners, particularly those who are looking to redcuce their heating expenses.
To ensure that your gas fireplace is functioning perfectly you should check the quality of its flame from time to time. A well adjusted gas fireplace should produce a blue flame that has a yellowish tip. If your unit doesn’t produce such kind of flame, find its control panel and then try adjusting the air shutter. If you already made the necessary adjustments but nothing happens, then you should call a specialist to check your unit there might be something wrong with it.
You should also check out if soot has formed on the unit’s windows. Gas operated fireplaces do not produce as much soot as the wooden operated ones. So if this is the case, then you should contact your gas supplier to know if the composition of gas being supplied to your home has changed.
Once you have checked all of that, you may now begin cleaning your gas fireplace unit. Begin by turning off the gas line and be sure to also unplug the unit from the outlet. Allow the fireplace to cool down for a while before you start cleaning it.
Next remove the logs, burner, stones and other components present inside the unit. Use a soft bristled nylon brush to clean the unit’s components. You should also scrub the firebox and vacuum the dirt away.
Use a dry cloth to clean the pilot light. Whether you are using propane gas fireplaces or other kinds of gas powered heating units, be sure that you turn off the pilot before you commence cleaning. And while you have the unit open, take the opportunity to inspect the vent for obstruction. Clean it if debris have already accumulated.
When cleaning the viewing glass, use a non-ammonia based cleaner. Once done cleaning, put everything back in place. Do not forget to check if the unit is burning well and be wary of possible gas leaks. If you smell gas leaking from the unit, shut it off and call a specialist to conduct a thorough inspection.
